The tourism sector is one of the important branches of foreign trade of France to the extent that it contributes to the external balance, to a level that became comparable to the food industry (8.5 billion in 20066) and even higher than that of the automobile in 2006. The balance between spending by foreign tourists in France and those of French tourists abroad, exudes a positive balance of € 11.4 billion. This balance has declined, particularly because of the high rate of the euro that greatly adds prices for foreigners outside the eurozone.

Destination France retains the first in the world in 2011, with over 81 million international tourist arrivals, and the 3rd largest in terms of revenue (39.2 billion euros) 7. In 2003, tourism consumption amounted to 102.4 billion euros, or 6.6% of GDP. A third of this figure is due to foreign tourists. The balance of tourism in the balance of payments accounts for 15 billion euros. It is the first French economic foreign exchange earner. Foreign tourists spent 34.5 billion euros in France, while the French tourists spend 19.5 billion euros abroad (mainly in Spain and Italy).

Foreign tourists, who represent 1/4 of the total, come mainly from neighboring countries, including British Islands (19.4%), Germany (18.6%), the Netherlands (16.4%). The United States, although representing only 3.9% of entries are at the forefront of revenue (15.2%).
